Ultrasonography service

Performance Equine Veterinary Service provides ultrasound procedures to equine patients in our practice and on the field. If you have questions about our services, please contact us.

Ultrasonography uses high frequency sound waves which are transmitted from a transducer (probe) into the patient. The characteristics of the tissue, muscle, tendon or bone influence the returning energy back to the transducer. The reflections are processed into an image which is viewed on the screen.

Ultrasound can help to better identify problems (i.e., thickened small intestine, tendon lesion) and understand the extent of many injuries, which helps guide diagnosis, treatment, time off, and prognosis.

How is the procedure performed?

  • An ultrasound machine with multiple probes is used depending on the area being examined.
  • The equipment used by Performance Equine Veterinary Service is a portable Sonosite M Turbo unit.

  • This equipment counts with a battery unit which permits exams to be performed in the farm and even in the pen if neccesary, which avoids the transportation of your horse.

What are common ultrasound procedures?

Performance Equine Veterinary Service counts with the probes necessary to perform the following procedures

  • Reproductive breeding exam (cycle check mares, pregnancy exams)
  • Tendons/ligaments
  • Masses (abscesses, tumors, foreign bodies, puncture wounds)
  • Colic: identify cause of colic (twisted small intestine, enteritis, colitis)
  • Chest: fluid in chest, pneumonia

Scanning

It was a stroke of luck to have met Jessica Hardy, in Belize, who had worked for Dr. Rullan and staff. Meeting Dr. Rullan is the difference in our young horse Paco living or having to be put down. On a very busy day, Dr. Rullan took his time to sit down and review Paco's history and photos., then devise a medical program to start. The staff at Performance Equine was also very professional, friendly, and helpful, from the first phone call in setting up the initial appointment to meeting them in person and to creating the vet medical charts, etc.
