There are several diseases of the foot that do not respond to conventional topical or systemic medications. We utilize Maggot therapy in order to clean up necrotic (dead) tissue from hoof abscesses or other infections.
This is a very old way to treat wounds. This treatment has been used by Mayans, aboriginal tribes and the Doctors of Napoleon to treate the wounded after battles.
The beneficial effects of this therapy are:
- Antibacterial action
- Growth of new blood vessels
Today the maggots are produced in specialized facilities and sterilized from bacteria. The maggots produce enzymes that destroy and consume the dead tissue along with bacteria with a consequent cleaning effect on the wound.
In horses the maggots have been applied for hoof injuries and laminitis with very good results.
PEVS uses this therapy frequently and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about this therapy.
As you see in this case there is an injury in the sole of the hoof where it was previously treated with maggot therapy.
After cleaning the injury from dead tissue, secretions and old maggots, new ones are placed and the wound covered with a bandage and a special shoe.
